If, as Quebec’s own websites proclaims, the province is on the hunt for “willing, dynamic people” to immigrate to its shores, then Milu Varghese certainly fits the bill. A trained Nurse, Milu and her husband, Reni Varghese, a design engineer, wanted to emigrate from their native Kerala- India and, spurred by a string of cheery, unsolicited emails from Quebec’s Immigration Department, the pair chose to settle in Montreal in March 2010. “We decided on Quebec for the French culture,” the 37-year-old Reni Varghese says. “We chose it even though we knew it would be harder initially.”
It certainly was. “The biggest mistake we made was that we never bothered to take French language training before we landed in Quebec. As matter of that we struggled initially to get a grasp over the new language”. Save for the occasional nervous breakdown that even prompted the purchase of a pair of one-way tickets to Toronto that they never used, the pair is quite happy with their lives in Quebec province of Canada. “We took a Canada government funded 6 months French language training”. They found highly paid jobs in their new-found language. Milu is a registered Nurse now, while Reni works at a large Montreal engineering firm. They work almost entirely in French.
